This is insured piano and organ moving, with thousands of pianos moved over the years. It is done with piano dollies, boards, straps and blankets, and with a crew when the job needs one. Grands are taken down properly, legs and lyre off and the piano placed onto a piano board, rather than wheeled out standing.
Piano moving is not the same as furniture moving. Knowing how to handle them and using the right equipment is key. An upright can weigh more than five hundred pounds and a large grand around a thousand. I am a piano tuner and know how to treat a piano. Our enclosed truck is set up to move and secure piano and organs.
One customer's upright player piano came out of a basement, across a hill in the yard, into the truck and on to a new home more than fifty miles away. Another Kawai baby grand travelled from Madison, New Jersey to a house in Hershey without a scratch on the piano or harm to the homes. Those are the kinds of moves this service is built around.

Ask a questionHow it goes
From the first phone call to a piano you can enjoy
Tell me about the piano
A good plan is essential. How tall is the upright piano? If a grand piano, what is its length (front to back)?
Tell me where we will pick up the piano and then deliver it to.
Tell me about any steps at both addresses.
Do we have to cross over grass or stones?
We prepare for the move
Grands come apart to travel and fit through doorways. The legs and pedals are taken off and placed into padded totes. A grand is secured to a padded piano board on its side.
An upright piano needs little preparation. The music rack needs to be lowered or removed. The piano is covered with a moving pad and placed onto a soft-wheeled dolly.
Finishing the job
Grands are reassembled and put into the exact spot you want. The piano and pedals are tested for proper function.
Uprights also placed exactly where you want. (Leave about four inches of space between the piano and the wall for the best sound.)
Avoid placing the piano near heat and air-conditioned output vents.
Tuning should wait 1-2 weeks for best results.
What I need to know to estimate your move
- Where (address) is the piano now, and where is it going?
- What kind of piano is being moved: spinet, console, old upright, upright player, grand piano?
- What is the height of the piano?
- If a grand piano, its length from the front end (keys) to the rounded back end.
- Details about any steps at each delivery address.
- Is there a sidewalk or macadam on which we can roll our dolly carrying the piano?
- Do we have to cross over grass or stones?
Questions people ask
Moving reaches a 100-mile radius of Harrisburg, which covers most of central Pennsylvania. Longer distances are quoted individually.
See the full service area+What equipment is needed to move an upright piano (console, spinet, studio)?
We use soft rubber-wheeled dollies, moving pads, straps, ramps, and an enclosed truck with a lift gate. On a flight of steps, we use a piano skid board with a Teflon bottom.
+How heavy is a piano?
Most upright pianos weigh between 400lbs and 700lbs. Big uprights (high back) can weigh 1,000 lbs. Grand pianos weigh between 450lbs and 900lbs. The largest concert grand pianos can weigh 1250lbs.
+How do you move a grand piano; my doors are narrow?
We remove the pedals and legs so it fits through doorways. We put a grand piano on its side on a grand piano skid board.
+Can a grand piano be stored on its side?
Yes, despite many folks thinking this is hard on a piano, it is not. I know many tuners and movers who know it is OK to store a grand on its side. I've seen hundreds of new grands on their sides at distributors' warehouses. I have stored grand pianos on their side for twenty years and have no problems.
